The Normans arrive in an Comar

Garrison Castlecomer

William the Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke erects a motte and castle east of the existing bridge, in what is now the car park of the Avalon House Hotel. Its strategically important situation at the meeting of three rivers ( Dinin (Dinan), Brokagh and Cloghogue make it the ideal location for controlling passing trade. In fact, Castlecomer gets its name from the Gaelic ‘an Comar‘ which translates to ‘The meeting of the streams‘. The Old Kilkenny review published a detailed journal on the 2018 excavations of the site.
